From Tree to Roof
Like most of Sierra Leone the Hospital is surrounded by trees. One of these trees was dying and was a danger to an old building. It was decided to cut the tree and use its parts to save the roof of the building it would have destroyed if it was left standing.
Like most manual work in Sierra Leone, it had to be done using only small hand held tools. The building rescued will be converted into a water filtering area, this is important as the Hospital must be able to provide itself with all essentials if it is to function properly as transport can be difficult and costly.
- The dying tree on the grounds of Mabesseneh Hospital near Lunsar
- The tree crashs safely to the ground
- The cutters and the director of the hospital pose for a photo
- After a break, the tree is measured out into pieces …
- … and the tree is cut up. As with most work in Mabesseneh it is done using only a few small hand-held machines
- The building is stripped of its old, damaged roof
- The planks ready for the roof with the remaining wooded area behind
- The first part of the roof is assembled
- Nothing wasted: the wood that could not be used on the roof was converted to charcoal
- The charcoal pile smoulders next to the completed roof and the stump of the tree

This is just too wounderful and marvelous. I like this piece of work: From Tree to the Roof.
